A Portrait of Madness
The following review is excerpted from RFS's August 2019 newsletter:
"An original play written by Polly Bishop titled A Portrait of Madness will be performed at the Reversing Falls Sanctuary on Friday, August 9 at 3 p.m. Designed to educate and inform, the play is a dramatization of bipolar disorder. A few years ago, Polly published a book Sunshine and Shadow: My Battle with Bipolar Disorder, based on her experience as one suffering from this mental illness. Having read any number of books about physical disease, mental illness and addiction over the course of my career, I found Polly’s book particularly useful in one respect and strikingly original in another. Polly was able to look back on her illness with perspective and insight useful to one suffering from bipolar disorder, to family members struggling to care for and cope with that person, and to professionals in the medical or helping professions. The book was original, in my reading, in that Polly included in the book communications from family and friends that revealed what they were experiencing with her at the time. I found Don Bishop’s poems especially compelling. The play brings these other voices from the flatness of the printed page to the full throated and distinctive sound of the stage."
